Baghouse Dust Collectors vs. Cartridge Dust Collectors

There is widespread marketing to convince buyers that cartridge-type dust collectors are the new-and-improved way to collect dust. There are many applications very well-suited to cartridge-type filtration. While the stereotype is that baghouses are old-fashioned, experienced engineers know that they excel in certain applications.

BENEFITS & APPLICATIONS OF BAGHOUSE FILTER DUST COLLECTORS

Baghouse filter dust collectors are particularly useful in some of the most challenging applications. The fabric bag filter is durable, flexible, and offers excellent release properties on a variety of particles and dust. Fabric bag filters typically have longer service life between replacement and can take the punishment of a demanding application with much slower deterioration.

When heat, moisture, fibrous particulate and/or heavy dust loading are part of the application, a baghouse dust collector is an excellent choice. This makes bag-filter systems the highly preferred choice for furnace and dryer applications. There is a plethora of different fabric filter medias to handle heat, sparks, and even acidic gasses in the airstream. For wood applications (fibrous dust) and grain dust, bag-type filters handle the high volume of dust that is common without clogging between pleats like a cartridge filter often has.

BENEFITS & APPLICATIONS OF CARTRIDGE FILTER DUST COLLECTORS

Cartridge-type dust collectors are increasingly common, as there are many types and configurations available. With quick, easy filter changes and low overall height, cartridge dust collectors are great for general purpose air filtration. Offering easy maintenance and quick cartridge filter changes, they are the preferred choice for welding, laser, plasma, and other fume/smoke applications. Pharmaceutical dust and other fine, dry dust applications are a great fit for cartridge filters as they offer excellent efficiency.

Bag-type and cartridge-type dust collectors are both very much evolving, and there is overlap between applications.
