Air volume measures the total amount of air moving through your ventilation system, calculated in cubic feet per minute (CFM). CFM is the most important number when selecting an industrial dust collector, cartridge unit, or baghouse. It determines the physical cabinet dimensions, fan motor horsepower, and total filter media area required for clean plant air.
Airflow Volume (CFM) = Duct Cross-Sectional Area (sq. ft.) × Air Velocity (FPM)
Under-sizing your system results in poor suction at pickup hoods, allowing airborne contaminants to escape into the shop. Over-sizing pulls extra conditioned air from your building and drives up electric utility costs. Calculating total CFM across all pickup branches ensures your collector runs efficiently.
Once you know your required CFM, view our ready-to-ship dust collection inventory filtered by capacity, or speak with an AM Industrial specialist to review equipment options.
Enter your duct cross-sectional area and target air velocity to determine total required CFM.
