Rectangular ductwork and round spiral pipe handle airflow friction differently. You cannot simply match the cross-sectional area when transitioning between rectangular and round duct. This calculator uses the standard Huebscher equation to find the equivalent round diameter that delivers identical airflow and static pressure resistance.
Equivalent Diameter (D) = 1.30 × [(Width × Depth)^0.625] ÷ [(Width + Depth)^0.25]
Always round your calculated diameter up to the nearest standard commercial spiral pipe size (such as 6″, 8″, 10″, or 12″). Sizing downward restricts airflow, increases duct friction, and creates unwanted static pressure.
